Forensics and Mysteries of Science
Materials Fee: $98
Supplies List: Notebook, pen/pencil, Crayons or other coloring utensils
The dead can’t tell us how they died, so it’s up to us to uncover their stories and give them a voice after theirs was taken from them. In this hands-on, interactive forensics class, students will apply scientific principles to solving criminal cases, and learn how a crime scene and trace evidence can link detectives to the culprit of a crime through a series of experiments and role-play. They will also learn the importance of a body in crime investigation, and the different ways they can tell detectives important information, including the victim’s age, sex, and time of death. A guided rat dissection will be conducted to study anatomy and gain a better understanding of how our bodies work. At the end of the course, students will be able to apply what they’ve learned to analyze a murder mystery, and create a presentation for who they believe the culprit is and why. *Notice: Sensitive topics and content will be discussed. Fake case studies will be created to mimic real investigations. At times, real cases relevant to the week’s topic will be discussed. We may watch episodes of forensic-centered shows (including Forensic Files and Genetic Detective). If you or your parent(s) want you to be exempt from any of this, please let me know so alternatives can be arranged.
